Here on Reverb, shop one of the largest selections, anywhere in the world, of new, used, and vintage fretless bass guitars. The classic ancestor to the bass guitar, the upright double-bass is known for its deep, rich, and smooth note articulations. Part of the reason it's able to get such smooth note articulation is due to its totally fretless neck, which allows players to glide from note to note without having to worry about the metal frets that would get in the way on a bass guitar's neck.

However, a lot of players aren't able to play, gig with, or travel as comfortably with a big, double-bass, even though they're after that smooth sound. If that sounds like you, you might want to consider a fretless bass guitar.

While still remaining portable and often affordable as well as easily playable, fretless bass guitars give players that smooth articulation and not blending of an upright. Of course, while playing a fretless bass can certainly lend a special melodicism and dynamic to your music, players must also be more aware and deliberate in their finger positioning. If you're coming from an upright bass-playing background, you're already familiar with fretless necks. But if you're usually a fretted bass guitar player, you'll have to get comfortable without those guidelines—like taking bumpers down at the bowling alley.

Your ability to develop accurate intonation depends on this. Look at the lines if you have them and remember as you move up the neck, your view of the fretboard changes, so you must ensure that you get to the line accurately.

This is tricky to explain but it's easy to bop at the low end without effort but find yourself a bit flat in the middle positions, because the bass neck isn't typically parallel to your line of sight. Fret just behind the line, or the 'perfect' note position. Where you think you put your finger matters but if you press the centre of your finger on the line, the outside of the pad of your finger will usually trap just a touch of string causing you to be a few cents sharp.
