Have you ever noticed that the first petition was not about provision, protection, or even forgiveness? Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered. Isaiah Have you not known? Have you not heard? He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Psalm Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Revelation Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Hebrews Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Psalms Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! Daniel Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel answered and said:. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.
Romans I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.I first truly understood integrity the day I was laid off due to budgetary reasons.A Theology of Biblical Counseling Video Lectures, Lesson 1: Introduction, by Heath Lambert
That might seem like a strange time to recognize something so universally praised as integrity. Don't get me wrong: It was painful. Losing my job in a bad economy was hardly a pleasing prospect. And yet, the person who told me I was laid me off did so with integrity. He said he had wrestled, painfully, with the decision—and I knew he was being honest. He said he had prayed about it—and it was clear he had. He said he had wept over the decision—and the tears at the corners of his eyes showed he meant it.
A week after getting laid off, I stood in line at church, waiting to take Communion from the same man. In addition to being my boss, he was also a priest at a local congregation where I happened to be visiting.
As I approached my former boss, the man who'd laid me off, he said "This is Christ's body, broken for you. This is Christ's blood, shed for you. Any time there is a human relationship, there is an opportunity for integrity or a lack thereof. In its most basic sense, integrity means to live out your life in private in the same way you live or talk about your life in public. And that's exactly how my former boss lives his life. Christians are called to the highest of ideals.
Is Being A Worship Leader Even Biblical?
We believe things like "death to self" and "the last shall be first," but we grapple and struggle almost constantly with living lives of integrity. Unfortunately, there are countless examples of Christian leaders who suffered great falls where it was made clear that their private lives look vastly different from the carefully curated lives they lived in front of their audiences. The Bible is somewhat silent on the actual term integrity. There are a handful of proverbs that mention integrity in certain translations Prov.
Scripture is filledhowever, with passages urging integrity in believers—it just talks about integrity without using that term. Think of the most famous New Testament commands for Christian living: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" Galatians Such a list is a command to live a life of the highest integrity, a life that brings goodness and blessings to all people. In short, the Christian command to integrity is a command to both talk and walk in the way of Jesus. It's a life marked by love, compassion, mercy, justice, and honoring God's call above everything else.
It's the life spoken of in 1 Peter: "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. If you lead worship, you may not think of yourself as a biblical counselor. Maybe that should change. While I was there David Powlison asked if we could chat about the relationship between singing congregationally and biblical counseling.
We sing with a group, while biblical counseling usually involves people. You just talk about issues. Counseling is interactive, while in corporate worship the communication is generally from the leader to the congregation. All this has a lot to do with what songs we choose at Christmas. We want to sing songs that give people real hope in a real Savior. Here are two clips from our conversation that spell out more of the connections.
Some are about God, drawing our hearts toward Him. Others are unto God, giving our faith direct expression to God. Yes, as a worship leader, it is my job to lead in counseling because, like you said, counseling is worship. Such an important reminder.
Hoping to change that. And thanks for your encouragement. Thanks for the reminder…. Thanks for leading us so effectively at the conference and on so many Sunday mornings. I like the idea of Biblical counseling and worship leading being similar. I agree that the worship leader must function as a pastor. I was reading Henry Brandt a Biblical Counselor this week. He says that the counseling process is greatly helped by gently showing people their sin and helping them get forgiven and cleansed 1 Jn 1.
It seemed to me that it could really help my Biblical counseling-Worship leading if I had a time of confession in the service. It could be a song or a prayer or both. The whole service could be an Is.Many writers agree that there is a leadership crisis in the churches of America, but they do not agree on the solution to the problem.
Many import American business principles into the local church, without much regard for what the Bible says about the requirements and responsibilities of church leadership.
As church entrepreneurs, they envision and implement growth plans. They view the church as a product to be marketed to the consumer. As in the retail business, you have to give the customers what they are looking for.
Worship Bible Verses
If Scripture is sufficient for life and godliness 2 Pet. Since Christ promised to build His church Matt. Two weeks ago, we looked at our text from the standpoint of the duties of church members toward their leaders. Today we will reverse this. While our text is not comprehensive, it does give some vital principles about the responsibilities of church leaders.
We learn…. That sounds like a tautology, but it needs to be said. But it does teach a distinction between leaders and followers in the local church. The New Testament uses different names or titles to refer to church leaders. They are called elders Actswhich refers to maturity in the faith. At other times, they are called overseers 1 Tim.
In Titus7 and Acts28 the two terms are used of the same office. They are called pastors Eph. Peter uses all three of these terms 1 Pet.
Another word for church leaders is the Greek verb, prohistemilit. The word in our text Heb. But the point is, leaders should lead. Because elders in the local church must lead by example, most of the qualifications for that office in 1 Timothy and Titus are godly character qualities. Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their Jewish brothers.
Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our countrymen and though our sons are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others… Nehemiah Conflict is a result of the fall. After Adam sinned, he blamed God and his wife.
The woman then blamed the serpent. The blame game began when sin entered into the world. But also God prophesied that sin would have a terrible effect on the relationship of the man and the woman.
The woman would desire her husband and the husband would rule over her Gen Gen She would seek to control the husband, and the husband would rule her by force. From this relationship, we have conflict in our homes, in our friendships, and in our work relationships. We have conflict between nations. The world has known no years without war. In fact, Paul taught that the acts of the flesh are hatred, discord, fits of rage, and factions Gal To be in discord is to be human.
In describing those who are part of the kingdom of heaven, he said that they would be known for working for peace and resolving discord. How do godly leaders resolve conflict? How do we become the peacemakers that we have been called to be?
Because there can be no true peace where there is sin, often the peacemaker will need to confront people in sin, so that there can be true peace. We see this with Nehemiah and how he responded to the conflict in Israel. We can learn a lot from Nehemiah, as we consider how he resolved the conflict in Israel.
In chapter 4, Nehemiah had conflict from without as the Samaritans persecuted him, but in chapter 5, he had conflict from within which threatened the completion of the wall.Question: "What does the Bible say about the position of worship leader? True worshipwhether corporate or individual, has several major components, as described in Romans Second, the manner of worship is the presentation of our bodies, including our hearts, minds, hands, thoughts, and attitudes to God.
Third, our worship involves renewing our minds through the Word of God. To know the truth, to believe the truth, to hold convictions about the truth, and to love the truth will naturally result in true spiritual worship.
Fourth, true worship is God-centered, not man-centered. So the first duty and responsibility of those who desire to lead others in worship must be to first understand the nature of worship itself.
If the worship leader is to lead, he must lead by example, and his life, therefore, must exemplify that of the true worshipper. As with all leaders in the body of Christ, his must first be spiritual leadership.
He must be the first to bow before God in humility and obedience. Just as the high priest had to sacrifice for his own sins first, so must the worship leader ensure he has scraped away the hardness from his heart and loosened the stiffness of his neck before he can begin to lead others.
He must lead in humility and genuine concern for those under his care. Because worship leader is not a biblical office for the church, his role is somewhat indistinct.
It is the responsibility of the worship leader to ensure that it is not the music, nor the instruments, nor the presentation, nor the voices which are the focus of the worship service. The responsibility of the worship leader is to become less, that Jesus Christ can become more.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—. The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
Pure Praise: A Heart-Focused Bible Study on Worship
But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly.
